- There has been a less than 1% change in Median Net Nominal Wealth (i.e. a fall allowing for inflation) for all deciles over the period with the exception of the lowest decile which saw an increase of £600 (14%) to £4,800 in its Net Wealth
- The only (approximate) deciles to have shown consistent Nominal Net Wealth Growth between 2006/8 and 2008/10 and then from 2008/10 to 2010/12 are those with Net Wealth:
- Less than £12,500
- £600,000 but < £1million
- £1m or more
- The following deciles - "The Squeezed Middle" - ended up with a lower Median Net Wealth in 2010/12 than they had in 2006/8:
- £40,000 but < £100,000
- £100,000 but < £150,000
- £150,000 but < £250,000
- £250,000 but < £300,000
- and £450,000 but £600,000
- (the £300,000 but < £450,000 increased their net wealth by £900, in nominal terms over the period)
- Net Wealth is defined as the sum of (net): property wealth; financial wealth; physical wealth (household goods, jewellery etc); private pension wealth (it excludes equivalent value of public sector pensions..)
- Some surprising facts:
- Net Wealth of £197,100 or more in 2010/12 would have placed your household in the Top Half of Wealthiest households
- The least wealthy 2.5% of households had a Total Net Wealth in 2010/12 of £2300, with no increase whatsoever since 2006/08
- The most wealthy 2.5% of households had a Total Net Wealth in 2010/12 of £1.876m (or 815 times that of the lowest 2.5%, ironically a fall from 829 multiple in 2006/8)
- Source of all data is ONS Study "Total Wealth in Great Britain 2010-12"
- All values are nominal values i.e. in money terms at that time, making no allowance for inflation
